John Travis is the founding teacher of Mountain Stream Meditation in Nevada City and is a teacher emeritus at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin. He has practiced Insight Meditation for over 50 years, and completed a four-year teacher training with Jack Kornfield.
In the 1970’s & 80’s, John lived and studied in Asia with many of the premier meditation masters of our time.  John’s practice included periods of monastic ordination in the Theravadan and Tibetan traditions.  His dynamic teaching style focuses on a non-dualistic approach that emphasizes the body, heartfulness, and the nature of awareness. In addition to his meditation training, John has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and is a certified Hakomi therapist.
John will be returning from Thailand mid-March and we are excited to have him back in Nevada City to teach this retreat.
Retreat is a beautiful way to bring in the Spring. You are invited to come join us!

Following is a few details regarding this retreat. More information is provided when you contact Robin, our registrar.
Prior residential retreat experience is helpful, but not required. Insight (Vipassana) Residential retreats are for practitioners interested in deepening their meditation practice, and through their own experience, learn more about the Buddha’s teachings.
Accommodations: Harmony Ridge Lodge is a lovely venue for retreat. Each room is very spacious, can accommodate 2-3 people, and has a private full bathroom in every room.
Simple and delicious vegetarian meals will be served by our Retreat Chef, Julie Roberts. Since it is not possible to accommodate everyone’s individual food preferences, we ask that you enjoy and eat the food that is served. However, if you have a medical issue or food allergies that require a special diet, please let us know. On-site, before the start of the retreat, Julie will create a list for those of us who have special food requirements.
Residential Retreat Scholarship Fund: The Mountain Stream community has generously contributed to this scholarship fund so everyone has the opportunity to attend residential retreats. Many thanks to those who have previously contributed and to those who can offer a donation going forward. A deep bow of appreciation for all generous offerings!
Mountain Stream offers a limited number of scholarships for our residential retreats. A partial scholarship allows for more people to benefit from financial support. Please contact our registrar, Robin, to find out details about receiving a scholarship. It’s important to understand, even if a person does receive a scholarship, the livelihood of the Teacher and the Staff is directly supported by the donations graciously offered by the whole retreat community.
Health Requirements
The Mountain Stream Covid policy now requires everyone who attends a residential retreat to provide a negative test result upon arrival to the retreat. Please take a test either Saturday 3/25 or Sunday 3/26 and take a time-stamped photo of test results. This proof of negative test results must be presented before entering Harmony Ridge Lodge for your retreat.  We also require that all participants be fully vaccinated (meaning 4 of the 5 shots)
Generosity
When practicing generosity on retreat, we offer our teacher and staff dana. For more information about this practice please open the following link: Dana information
