One of the foundations of Buddhism is generosity, known as dana, a Pali and Sanskrit word for giving and offering. It is that primary feeling in the inclination to give, when we have no expectation of any kind of repayment. When the practitioner is brought into the present moment as heart and mind unite. Traditionally, Buddhist teachings are offered freely and with great generosity since they are considered priceless. In return, we offer dana at a sitting group, class and retreat to support the teachers and staff so they may continue their Dharma work. This is the practice of cultivating generosity and of letting go.
Vipassana teachers rely on dana as an essential means of support. This is a unique way of living in the modern world, to rely on the generosity of others. This tradition continues in Asia today where the close relationship between monasteries and their communities has been traditionally intertwined. Monks depend on the community for their daily food, and in return they freely offer the community spiritual guidance, blessings and teaching.
Basic Expenses
Regular weekly meditation groups and other similar weekly activities are offered free of charge. If a facility is rented, it is an on going expense of having a meditation group. This is part of everyday life where there are bills to pay.
For years, Mountain Stream Meditation Center has held daylong retreats and residential retreats at various rented locations. Registration fees for events and retreats cover the cost of rent, food, travel for the teacher(s) and administering the retreat. These are based on a per day rate to cover the costs of a retreat and provide the healthy support for each retreatant and staff member.
A series of introductory classes can last for five weeks, meeting for less then 2 hours each week. A registration charge of $20.00-35.00 per person is requested to cover the rent and administration costs. The offering to the teacher, the dana, is separate and reflects the importance of the Dharma work that is freely given.
Mountain Stream also offers "scholarship" programs for those who wish to attend our classes or retreats but are unable to pay for part or all of it.
